Inside a passport

What you can check

A passport gathers the information submitted by refurbishers and repairers in the network. Attached documents are reviewed by RefurbPassport before they are published.

Two indicators

Two complementary scores

Both are calculated from the passport's content. A low trust score does not necessarily mean a bad device: it mostly signals an incomplete history.

Trust score

Higher is better.

Is the history complete and documented?

85–100
Excellent
Complete history, no open alerts
70–84
Good
Recent diagnostics, documented repairs
50–69
Fair
Partial information, to be completed
0–49
Low
Insufficient history or unresolved alerts

Risk score

Lower is better.

Are there signals to look into before buying?

0–20
Low
No active alerts
21–45
Moderate
Minor, documented points of attention
46–70
High
Open alerts, review recommended
71–100
Critical
Incomplete history or revoked passport

How it works

How a check works

  1. 01

    Find the identifier

The IMEI (15 digits) or serial number is in the device settings. The seller can also share the QR code of its passport.

  2. 02

    Run the check

We validate the format, then look up the matching passport. If none exists yet, a “pending” passport is opened: it stays empty until a professional completes it.

  3. 03

    Read the report

Status, scores, diagnostics, repairs, verified documents and alerts. Download the PDF certificate to keep a record of what you saw.

After the check

What to look at before you pay

A passport does not replace your questions to the seller: it helps you know which ones to ask.
  • Read the status first

"Active": a professional from the network, named on the page, has attested the passport. "Pending": nobody has completed it yet, so it is not a guarantee.

  • An alert shows up

Don't pay until the seller has explained it in writing. If the alert looks wrong, report it from the passport so it can be reviewed.

  • Questions to ask the seller

Invoice, warranty period, battery condition, origin of replaced parts. Also compare the IMEI shown by *#06# with the last 4 characters on the passport.

  • A link or QR code from the seller

Check that the page opens on the RefurbPassport website and that the passport number matches. A PDF or screenshot alone is not enough.

Who we are

A register, not a shop

RefurbPassport does not sell devices. Refurbishing professionals record what they did and found on each device; buyers read it before paying. Every piece of information shows who recorded it, when and how.

Read our mission

An IMEI is never shown in full

  • Encrypted identifiers

IMEIs and serial numbers are encrypted (AES-256-GCM) and matched by HMAC fingerprint, never stored in plain text.

  • Masked display

Only the last 4 characters appear in passports, certificates and API responses.

  • Logged access

Every sensitive access is recorded — who, when, why — without ever logging the value itself.

Frequently asked questions

Before you check a device

Another question? Write to us

Is the IMEI publicly visible?
No. The full identifier is never displayed: only the last 4 characters appear. It is stored encrypted and only decrypted for internal needs, which are themselves logged.
Where do I find the IMEI or serial number?
Dial *#06# in the Phone app, or open Settings › General › About on iPhone, Settings › About phone on Android. It is also often printed on the original box and the SIM tray.
What happens if the device has no passport yet?
A “pending” passport is opened for the device. It contains no history until a professional in the network completes and certifies it: at that stage, it is not a guarantee.
How do I read the trust score and the risk score?
The trust score (0 to 100) measures how complete and reliable the history is: higher is better. The risk score (0 to 100) reflects alerts and anomalies: lower is better.
Who can issue or complete a passport?
Only organisations in the RefurbPassport network — refurbishers, retailers and repairers — whose account has been verified. Every passport shows which organisation attested it.
Does a passport replace the seller's warranty?
No. The passport documents the history submitted by professionals; legal and commercial warranties remain the seller's responsibility. RefurbPassport cannot rule out fraud beyond the documented information.
